ORIGINAL HAMPSHIRE POTTERY TABLE LAMP w 16 TURTLEBACK DOME, ARTS & CRAFTS

The arts and crafts lamp base was made by Hampshire Pottery of Keene, New Hampshire. The table lamp is a nice desk or end table size as it stands 18 1/2 tall to the top of the finial on the heat cap when telescoping rod is fully compressed. The shade has a diameter of 16" and is 7" deep of the base. The shade is just as outstanding!!

It is done in the arts and crafts tradition and is considered a geometric pattern. The glass is a subtle translucent heavily mottled green.

There are 5 rows of rectangular shaped shaped glass to form the top half of the shade. Then there is a horizontal band of this same glass just above the Turtleback tiles. The next row are the superbly hand crafted and cut Turtleback tiles done in a emerald green. There are 18 of these tiles.

The shades continues with another 3 horizontal rows of this rectangular shaped mottled green background glass. The bottom of the shade is finished with a bronze rim to give this shade added support. The top of the shade has a bronze ring in it.

The exterior lead lines have a nice Craftsman brown patina. This shade was made the exact same way as L. Tiffany Studios made their leaded glass shade at the turn of the century. The base compliments this shade exceptionally well. The base has an organic bulbous squat form that resembles a gourd.

There is vertically ribbing that bulges out in a 3 dimensional fashion. There is a two light cluster with bell pull chains that are in fine working order. There is a wheel attached to the top of the cluster to receive the Turtleback shade with a reticulated heat cap that locks the shade to the wheel with it 8/32 thread. This is the same way as Tiffany Studios mounted their shades to their lamp bases. There are similar vintage lamps with Grueby Pottery lamp based and original Tiffany Studios leaded glass geometric shades. An added feature is the lamp is telescoping (you can raise and lower it).

It can be raised as high as 21. The base and the shade are consider to be in excellent condition. There are no cracks to any of the Turtleback tiles and only 1 crack in the glass next to the top ring. This is considered insignificant and normal age use.

There is no signature on the shade. Some of the soldering around the inside of the tiles is a little bit sloppy.

The base is also in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks chips or dings. It is signed on the bottom with Hampshire in block letter impressed mark along with the letter M in a circle and the mold number 900 in raised relief. It has been recently rewired with the antique brown rayon cord and it works great. The 2 original antique pull chain sockets are in fine working condition as tested and it has a high, low off clicker switch to give a long life to the pull chain sockets.

This is a quality early pottery table lamp made by one the finer potters of the day. Hampshire Pottery competed with Grueby Pottery in many ways. They were much more affordable as they were mold made as opposed to hand thrown. The shade is from a much later period and but is quite similar to an original Tiffany Studios leaded glass shade. This table lamp would look outstanding on any arts and crafts style end table or desk.

It would look wonderful in a mission style decor as well. CLEMENTS ANTIQUES OF NEW HAMPSHIRE STOREFRONT. Please wait for my Invoice before paying.
