Antique Moser 15Mantle Luster Lamp, Blue & Gold with Ormolu Base & Enameled Panels
Item under consideration is a beautiful, unique, very rare, Antique (ca1860), 15 3/8 inch tall, Hand Decorated, MOSER BOHEMIAN MANTLE LUSTER LAMP made, what is currently the Czech Republic. The Luster lamp has a opaque blue colored body(photo # 3) covered in small gilt abstract florals (photos # 1 & 2). There are10 cartouches around the circumference of the bowl containing miniature portraits of persons and florals (photos # 8-12). There are 10 long crystal spear prisms hanging down from between the cartouches (photo # 4), all supported by a detailed ormolu metal base and supporting bracket (photos #6 & 7). Lamp has 2 distinct parts.
Glass part with a highly decorated glass bowl shape with an attached hollow tubular extension & 10 long hanging prisms (photos # 1 & 2). Consists of a round bowl, 6 inch in diameter and 3 inch deep, with a 9 inch long, 1 3/4 inch diameter, hollow glass tubular extension. Metal part has a very detailed ormolu metal base with a 9 3/4 inch tall securing bracket which accommodate the cups glass extension (photos #6 & 7). The glass portion bowl and extension tube are a beautiful opaque blue color completely covered with hand painted gilt gold florals, vines and leaves (photo #1 & 2).
The bowl has 10 enameled portrait and floral oval cartouches , 1 /8 inch x 1 7/8 inch, positioned around the circumference of the cup (photos #8 - 12). The portraits are miniatures of persons and florals (photos # 8,9,10,11,12) done in enamels. There are five, 4 inch long x 1/2 inch wide white panels position around the base of the glass tube (photo # 5) covered in gilt gold florals. Hanging from the cup between the cartouches are ten, 2-part, 9 1/2 inch long, scalloped edged, brilliant cut and notched, crystal, spear prisms (photo # 4).The metal portion consisting of a base and securing bracket are highly detailed ormolu covered brass (photo # 6 & 7). The base is 6 3/4 inch wide 1 3/4 inch tall (photo # 7). The securing brackets has 2 identical sides. Each is 9 3/4 inch tall and 2 1/2 inch wide (widest point) with a 3 inch tall cherub figure on the bottom (photo # 6). The hollow glass tube is secured between these 2 bracket halfs.
Fabrication design concept of the Luster was to. Accommodate lighting by candle, because electricity was not yet commonly available at the time of fabrication. The center body of the Luster is hollow to accommodate water, the candle end is inserted in the water tube, which extinguished the candle when the flame burned low.
Height including base- 15 5/8 inch. Diameter across rim- 5 7/8 inch. Width of base- 6 3/4 inch. Weight- 5 pounds, 11.6 ounces.
